Grommet insertion
Grommet (or tympanostomy tube) insertion is an operation that a hollow tube is inserted on the eardrum. It is usually done when there is persistent glue ear. Glue ear is a condition, when the space behind the eardrum is filled with fluid, rather than air. This is usually caused due to a blocked or dysfuctioning tubes called eustachian tubes. The buildup of fluid causes hearing loss. A grommet or tympanostomy tube is a hollow tube, placed in the eardrum to allow air to flow into the middle ear. This helps to prevent fluid from building up behind the eardrum, reduces the risk of infection, and can improve hearing. Grommet insertion is typically performed in children but can also benefit adults with chronic ear problems. It is usually done under local or general anaesthetic.
