Flexible Naso-laryngoscopy
Flexible naso-laryngoscopy is a diagnostic procedure done by Dr Fragkiadakis to examine the upper respiratory and digestive tract.
Nasal endoscopy is an examination of the nasal passages and laryngoscopy is the examination of the larynx (voice box) and vocal cords using a flexible endoscope, passing through the nose.
Why it’s performed:
-
Diagnosis of the patency of the nasal passages (nasal septum, sinuses, adenoids and post nasal space)
-
Diagnosis of hoarseness or voice changes
-
Chronic cough or difficulty swallowing
-
To assess nasal masses, throat cancer or growths on the vocal cords
-
Post-operative monitoring of airway issues
-
Detection of inflammation, infection, or trauma to the upper airway
How is it performed?
-
Preparation: Flexible laryngoscopy is typically done without any anaesthesia. Sometimes a topical nasal decongestant with a local anaesthetic might be used to make the whole procedure more comfortable for you. This will usually make the throat feel numb.
-
The Procedure: Dr Fragkiadakis will insert a flexible naso-laryngoscope through the nose to visualize the nasal passages, the throat, the larynx and vocal cords. You may be asked to make sounds or cough during the exam to help the doctor assess vocal cord function.
-
Duration: The procedure usually often lasts less than a minute.
-
Recovery: If a local anaesthetic has been applied, it will usually wear off after half an hour.
