Treatment of BPPV (Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo)
Epley manoeuvre
What is BPPV?
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common cause of dizziness and a spinning sensation (vertigo). It happens when tiny calcium crystals inside your ear become dislodged and move into the balance organs (the semicircular canals). This interferes with signals sent to your brain, causing brief episodes of vertigo, especially when you move your head in certain ways. BPPV can affect anyone, but is more common in middle-aged and older adults. Sometimes it follows a head injury or ear surgery, but often there’s no clear reason for its onset. Typically is triggered by movements such as bending down or looking up, getting off or lying on a bed. It comes in burst of spinning lasting for a few seconds to a minute.
What is the Epley Manoeuvre?
The Epley manoeuvre is a simple, safe treatment for BPPV. It involves a series of gentle head and body movements designed to guide the loose crystals out of the semicircular canals and back to their proper place. This helps restore normal balance signals and relieves vertigo. The manoeuvre can be performed in a clinic.
How Does the Epley Manoeuvre Work?
-
Preparation: The manoeuvre is best done on a bed, as it may cause dizziness during or after the movements.
-
The Steps: The Epley manoeuvre involves Dr Fragkiadakis turning your head and body in a specific sequence. These movements use gravity to move the crystals in the correct place in the semicircular canals. The exact steps depend on which ear is affected.
-
After the Manoeuvre: Sit upright for the rest of the day. Some people experience a bit of “heavy” head for a few days.
Is the Epley Manoeuvre Safe?
The Epley manoeuvre is generally very safe with a very high success rate. However, you may feel your dizziness worsen temporarily during the exercise. If you have neck, heart, joint, or eye problems, check with your doctor before trying the manoeuvre. Avoid driving while you still feel dizzy.
